The Ultimate Guide to Candle Safety and Burn Time: Get the Most Out of Every Pour
A hand-poured soy candle is a small investment in your home’s atmosphere — and like any good investment, it deserves to be treated right. Whether you’re new to candles or you’ve got a drawer full of spent jars, here’s our founder-approved guide to getting the most out of every single pour.
The First Burn Matters Most
Your candle’s very first burn sets the tone for every burn after it. Let it burn until the wax melts evenly across the entire surface, edge to edge — this typically takes one to two hours for our 11oz Single Wick Candles, longer for the 17oz Triple Wick. Skipping this step is the number one cause of “tunneling,” where wax burns straight down the middle and leaves the outer rim untouched (and unused).
Trim the Wick Every Time
Before every burn, trim your wick to about a quarter inch. A too-long wick causes a larger, smokier flame, faster burn time, and soot buildup on the glass. It sounds small, but this one habit is the difference between a candle that lasts and one that burns out fast.
Mind Your Burn Time — In Both Directions
Burning a candle for less than an hour won’t let the wax pool properly, and it shortens the candle’s overall lifespan. But burning for more than four hours at a stretch can overheat the vessel and shorten the wick’s life. Somewhere in between is the sweet spot — long enough to build a full melt pool, short enough to keep things safe.
Give Multi-Wick Candles Extra Attention
Our Dough Bowl Candles and Triple Wick Candles are built for bigger spaces and bigger impact, which means multiple wicks burning at once. Keep an eye on the melt pool to make sure all wicks are melting evenly — if one side is lagging, it may need a slightly longer burn to catch up before you extinguish it.
Know When to Stop
As a rule of thumb, stop burning any candle once about half an inch of wax remains at the bottom of the vessel. This protects the container from overheating and keeps your space safe. And always burn on a heat-safe, level surface, away from drafts, curtains, and anything that can tip.
Why It’s Worth the Extra Care
Every Pacific Candle Co. candle is hand-poured in Huntington Beach using 100% soy wax — toxin-free, vegan, and phthalate-free. That kind of craftsmanship deserves a little care on your end too. Do right by your candle, and it’ll do right by your home.
